Compunet

The British C64 online service of the mid-1980s where demos were uploaded and talent was scouted — matt-gray's route into the games industry: "If it hadn't been for Compunet, I would probably have never left first base. It was vital in enabling me to get my demos out there and heard" (source: s-c64com-matt-gray-interview).

Facts#

  • "When I first logged onto Compunet I was amazed at this underground culture of c64 users all showcasing their talents either as coders, artists or musicians … In a lot of ways it was like a training camp for future games developers"; friends made there: Graham Hunter, Paul Docherty (Dokk), Cory Kin (Hex) (sources: s-vandalism63-matt-gray-interview, s-c64com-matt-gray-interview).
  • "Software developers were using it to find coders, artists and musicians" — Gray's first commissions (Dalali, Thalamus) came from his Compunet demos; the Quedex loader "already made as a Compunet demo" (sources: s-arcadeattack-matt-gray-interview, s-retrogamesmaster-matt-gray-interview).
