Khyron (Paul Schultz)

kosmic musician from Cincinnati who by 1997 built synthesizers at the revived Moog Music and had moved from tracking to MIDI sequencing. The main source is Jeremy Rice's interview in TraxWeekly #111 (source: s-tw111-interview-khyron); an earlier piece, "Khyron Unleashed" (#30, 12 October 1995, by psibelius), is in the archive but not ingested.

Facts#

• Paul Schultz; handle from the Robotech villain; earlier handle Burger Death. Present when #trax split from #coders (per the interviewer's introduction; see tracker-scene-history).
• Started with MMEdit in 1994 after seeing Renaissance's Amnesia (about 1993) and Second Reality; groups RAM, ACiD, then the KLF / kosmic from late 1994 (13 members then). Dropped out of 20-minute-chip-compo #6 in autumn 1995 (source: s-tw032-20-minute-chip-compo); liam-the-lemming met him at The Party 5 (source: s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming).
• Tracked about 3½ years; modules he rates: "200 Miles From Earth" (k_earth.xm), "Wormhole" (k_worm.xm), "DreamState" (Restless scene mag) — see xm-format.
• Gear: a Moog Liberation, a Kurzweil K2000 (18 MB of samples in one MIDI piece), a 1 MB gravis-ultrasound; sampled old Moogs because they have no MIDI.
• Positions: tracking is for the broke, MIDI for real-time synth control and clean sound (midi-in-trackers); a label demo CD would contain no tracked music (commercial-tracking); techno lives on arrangement and production, not theory (arrangement); two years of punk bass, little theory.
• Favourites: basehead, Mellow-D, B00MER, WAVE, "some guy in ultrabeat", C-Quence, the TP3 four-channel compo tunes; used to beat phoenix at scenetriv.
