Founder of Chill Productions, a Toronto group started in 1995 by a 30-year-old techno/trance/ambient composer who "was getting flack" from other groups for his style, his GUS and his FastTracker; also a member of vicious's VSL. Interviewed by Master of Darkness for traxweekly's Faces in the Crowd in November 1995. No real name is printed; the contact address is john.taite@realm.tor250.org. The single source for this page is that interview (source: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex).

Facts#

  • 30 in November 1995; about a year of tracking, almost ten years of writing synth music; a university graduate starting a presentation-graphics business — music "a very passionate hobby".
  • Uses a GUS and FastTracker; influences acid jazz, funk and techno; not a fan of demo music ("sorta tired").
  • Chill Productions: founded for quality control — "I just don't want tracks that aren't polished"; WHQ Sight & Sound BBS, Toronto, distros in the 416 and 905 area codes, a European HQ and distro in the Netherlands, releases on ftp.uniserve.com/pub/gamesnet/Chill/. DefeX (older than him, "one of the better trackers") had left; The Third Man had joined. zinc signed as "Chill Productions / Profound Records" by 1997 (source: s-tw096-studio-tracking-tips).
  • Releases through Chill and VSL include World1, Statik and Statik'95 (statikling mix), Our Secret Place, Theme for a Desolate Place, Dirty to the Hardcore, Hydrochloric Wasteland, Accelerate, Trance Canada and Harmonial.
  • On FITC: "Finally, it gives us unknowns a chance at stardom."
  • master-of-darkness (January 1996) cites "deus ex of Chill" complaining that his music was marked unfairly on Demonews (source: s-tw043-interview-pariah; see hornet).
