roboctopus

Game Boy musician and author of LSDJ & You, a column of intermediate lsdj technique articles written for noisechannel.org around 2013–2014 and, when that site began to fail, ported by hand to a tumblr: "I wrote a series of articles on the WAV channel. They were on noisechannel.org which seems to be dying. I'm slowly porting them over to my tumblr" (2014-07-10, source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-wav-instrument-tutorials). The audience is stated in the first article: "These columns are not necessarily for beginners; I'm going to assume you know how to compose a song in LSDJ. My goal is to help intermediate users learn techniques to really fill out their songs" (source: s-lsdj-and-you-echo-chamber).

He is the wiki's main voice for drawing waves rather than generating them — an angular saw, a one-sample pulse, a notched sine bass, a hand-narrowed 16-wave pulse-width-modulation bank — and for echoes as an arrangement tool. Earlier, the LSDJ Advanced Tricks thread pointed readers at the same series, "including a tutorial on the F command" (source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-advanced-tricks).

Facts#

  • Four articles survive on the tumblr (roboctopus-8bit.tumblr.com), listed by the site's own API: The Kinda Sorta Supersaw-lite (2013-09-17), LSDJ & You – Echo Chamber, – Collapse of the Waveform and PWM, I Choose You! (all 2014-05-14, the port date). Audio examples are on SoundCloud under lsdjandyou.
  • noisechannel.org resolves again in 2026 but serves only a "Click here to enter" splash; the wiki treats the tumblr as the source of record.
  • His mixing habit, stated as the answer to "the WAV channel is too quiet": keep pulse instruments below A8 rather than pushing the wave channel (source: s-lsdj-and-you-collapse-of-the-waveform).
  • A save of his circulated for the SPEECH instrument, described in a 2012 thread as CHK R02 DIZ R02 OUT R02 — "which sounds really cool" (attributed with an "I think"; source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-speech-synthesis).
  • Method he recommends for designing a wave: search the web for a picture of the waveform you want and approximate the shape in the WAVE screen (source: s-lsdj-and-you-supersaw-bass).
