TW #41 — Interview with Zinc on the Impromptu Compo (DennisC)

A short follow-up interview: zinc explains the ImpromptuCompo he started in #trax.

Key claims#

• Born of boredom in #trax with Floss and two other trackers; organised with gd (GraveDigger), held in the channel #ImpCompo; four editions by January 1996 with growing interest.
• Format: like the 20-minute-chip-compo it is a timed compo with a sample pack sent by DCC when the compo begins — but the samples are "regular quality" rather than chips, the time limit is 45 minutes and there is no channel limit. Whoever picks the samples (Zinc or gd) may not enter.
• Results were to go to cdrom.com under music/songs/other (the special directory had vanished).
• Pitch: "It doesn't eat out of tracking time like some compos that are stretched over a longer period, but unlike chip compos, you get enough time and good enough samples to compose something decent."

Relevance#

The non-chip sibling of the 20mc — the same timed-compo format applied to full samples — and another data point for the 1995–96 compo culture.
