Paganus

Piano-centred tracker of epinicion and Aim Higher, from the Toronto BBS scene, interviewed by Atlantic for traxweekly's Faces in the Crowd in October 1995. No real name is printed; the contact address given is andrew.crabtree@canrem.com. The single source for this page is that interview (source: s-tw030-interview-paganus).

Facts#

• Started about spring 1994: ModEdit 2.0 (unused), then Scream Tracker 3.01b from the BBS "the twisted tower"; first "real" S3M "wilting coliflower". Found the scene through an Atomic module (a small Toronto group led by b0b of Mazurka) and the BBS "bobby's World", advertised as "Dedicated to Helping New Composers".
• Early influences: b0b's songs (later found to be ripped from Amiga four-channel modules), Jazzman of Atomic, purple-motion and skaven.
• Music heavy on chords and melody, light on percussion, with the piano used "quite frequently"; some childhood piano lessons, plays the flute.
• Joined Epinicion and Aim Higher because "they were the only ones who'd take me without a resume"; argues that scene snobbery is fed by hero-worship on both sides ("THIS MAN IS GOD!").
• Releases: two songs each on Aim Higher's disks "Foundation" and "Unification" (October 1995), including a remix of his "Heartbreak"; the Epinicion single "Winter" on peace.wit.com.
• Earlier handle Imagix: master-of-darkness calls him "Imagix (now paganus)", one of the people around DDT, pariah's first group (source: s-tw043-interview-pariah); as Imagix of Epinicion he gave Master of Darkness the Sound Blaster 16 he started on in February 1995, and is named among his influences (source: s-tw027-faces-in-the-crowd-master-of-darkness).
