TraxWeekly

A text-only newsletter of the PC tracker scene, published semi-weekly from 12 March 1995 to 1998 for 119 issues, modelled after hornet's "Demonews" and "a HORNET affiliation": distributed from ftp.hornet.org / www.hornet.org and a listserver, contributions in 78-column plain text, released every Thursday or Friday. Editor and publisher: psibelius (Gene Wie); 1997 staff writers Atlantic (Barry Freeman), Behemoth (David Menkes), Bibby (Andrew Bibby), Mage (Glen Dwayne Warner) and zinc (Justin Ray). Issue #50 (7 March 1996) had 488 subscribers (sources: s-traxweekly-archive, s-tw106-a-little-panning).

The newsletter was founded by populus (Nicolas Roberge) "with Neurosis"; Populus set up the WWW page and the mail, handed the editorship to Popcorn when he ran short of time, and left for good in #16 (29 June 1995), citing pestering and the cost of his internet account — reader mail, he said, was mostly complaints about the ASCII art; the newsletter is delivered "free of charge … from our hearts" (source: s-tw016-interview-populus). Before Psibelius, Popcorn (Chris Campbell, "TraxWeekly Editor / Hornet / Epi") edited the newsletter in 1995 — "with TraxWeekly since the first issue" but first in print with the TheHacker interview of #5, "TraxWeekly Co-Editor" in #7 (27 April 1995), releasing the issue himself by #11 ("no time to write a long intro, must release TraxWeekly"), "TraxWeekly Editor and … in Hornet" in #13 (11 June 1995) and "TraxWeekly Editor . [Hornet.TraxWeekly.MC3]" in #17 (6 July 1995) (sources: s-tw005-interview-thehacker, s-tw007-interview-ryan-cramer, s-tw011-interview-perisoft, s-tw013-interview-big-jim, s-tw017-interview-amusic); he offered AmusiC the 20-minute-chip-compo column in September 1995 "when he was still an editor" (sources: s-tw011-how-to-enhance-your-music-collection, s-tw032-20-minute-chip-compo). In #13 Popcorn says he was finishing Grade 10, had an AdLib as his first sound card, made his first tune in scream-tracker-3 and had been online only since December 1994 (source: s-tw013-interview-big-jim). #15 (23 June 1995) is the first issue in the wiki's sources with a categorised contents list ("General Articles", "Interviews", "Group Columns"); the newsletter had a web site by June 1995, whose background tiles claim made with Fractint and DeluxePaint II Enhanced (source: s-tw015-interview-claim). In 1995 the editor also lent the newsletter to projects: the "Tracker Survey" collected feature wishes for Jason Diamond's planned freeware tracker (source: s-tw032-tracker-survey). Late issues grouped replies into themed sections — "The Scene: Commercially Viable?" ran from #113 to #118 (source: s-tw114-commercial-tracking-debate).

Content: scene news, tracking tips, interviews, reviews, competition announcements (the 20-minute-chip-compo column), group columns (kosmic, epinicion, defiance and PURE (ex-TRAXX) in the first issues, aim-higher, NOISE, Explizit, Skyjump…; the first four per the TOC, the groups described in defiance and s-tw008-interview-blaze-runner), letters and "unrelated fun stuff". The interviews, 1995–98#

The early "Interviews" section (1995)#

• Populus's era. Populus (Epinicion / TraxWeekly) interviewed Basehead (#1), leinad (#2, chat of 1995-03-15), Chuck Biscuits (#3), nemesis (#4, chat ended 1995-03-05) and blaze-runner (#8, signed "TW/Union/Epinicion", "a last minute interview") (sources: s-tw001-interview-basehead, s-tw002-interview-leinad, s-tw003-interview-chuck-biscuits, s-tw004-interview-nemesis, s-tw008-interview-blaze-runner). Zer0 (Defiance / TraxWeekly) did his first interview in #4 (stalker) (source: s-tw004-interview-stalker). psibelius signed "TraxWeekly Columnist" for the NAID opinion interviews of #6 (source: s-tw006-naid-opinion-interviews); in December 1995 he recalled that issue as "back when Populus was still running the show" (source: s-tw040-interview-blackwolf).
• Popcorn's era. Popcorn interviewed thehacker (#5), ryan-cramer (#7), big-jim (#13) and amusic (#17) (sources: s-tw005-interview-thehacker, s-tw007-interview-ryan-cramer, s-tw013-interview-big-jim, s-tw017-interview-amusic); Gator did #15's claim interview and GraveDigger of hornet (gd@ftp.cdrom.com) the joke "SV" interview in the same issue (sources: s-tw015-interview-claim, s-tw015-interview-sv); Psibelius, signing "ACiD.Epinicion.TraxWeekly", interviewed Populus (#16) and lord-pegasus (#18); maelcum interviewed quarex (#19) and printed the log "complete and UNEDITED"; clef of Epinicion interviewed jase (#22) (sources: s-tw016-interview-populus, s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus, s-tw019-interview-quarex, s-tw022-interview-jase).
• End of 1995. Trifixion's loki interview (#35) ran under General Articles, not FITC, and was his first real TW article (source: s-tw035-interview-loki). Psibelius resumed interviewing in #40 (28 December 1995) after "a very long time since we've had some interviews in TraxWeekly"; blackwolf's was "the last TW interview for 1995", followed by zalt's (sources: s-tw040-interview-blackwolf, s-tw040-interview-zalt).

"Faces in the Crowd" (FITC, from #26)#

• Founding and charter. Created by kal-zakath (John Townsend, Inferno Productions) as "a new weekly feature" in #26 (14 September 1995) to publicise unknown composers, on the premise that Demonews reviews "do little to help the no-name composer"; the format was an info piece, a short IRC interview, a release listing with archive paths and an e-mail address; applications by e-mail or via 'jtown' on #trax (source: s-tw026-faces-in-the-crowd-intro). #26 is the manifesto — nobody is interviewed in it. Interview #1 was master-of-darkness (#27, held 15 September 1995), #2 mesonyx (#28, held 16–17 September); Master of Darkness joined the column to screen uploads, and a "notable tunes" list was planned for tunes without a k_ or fm- prefix (sources: s-tw027-faces-in-the-crowd-master-of-darkness, s-tw028-faces-in-the-crowd-mesonyx). Zinc restated the charter in #60 (May 1996): "every musicians' chance to get his/her 15 minutes of fame … there was a time when even Basehead was a nobody!", answering complaints about interviewing "nobodys" (source: s-tw060-interview-fisherman). Deus Ex, an interviewee: "Finally, it gives us unknowns a chance at stardom" (source: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex).
• The one-week separate publication. For one week FITC was a separate "Faces In The Crowd: The Publication" (staff: Kal Zakath, Master of Darkness, DennisC, Atlantic) with its own numbered interviews; #29 (6 October 1995) prints its Interview #4 (smeghead, by Master of Darkness) and #5 (esper-division, by DennisC) and the comments note saying that, on the interviewees' and Psibelius's advice and "due to a lack of publicity of the inaugural FITC publication", it was folded back into TraxWeekly as a section; it carried a "Suggested Songs" list (Timelord, Fred, Mik Rippon) that drew criticism (sources: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead, s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-esper-division). Interview #3 is not in TraxWeekly.
• Editor and crew, autumn 1995. Kal Zakath signs #34 as "FITC Editor": the column started "a few months" before November 1995 as one interview a week and grew "with the help of Master of Darkness, Atlantic, and DennisC" into "interviews, tracking tips, reviews and scene commentary"; it skipped #33 (source: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex). Roles: Master of Darkness ("Mdark", Aim Higher, maz@io.org) interviewed ender (#30), vicious (#31) and deus-ex (#34), wrote the "Complaints" column (#32) and downloaded "everything for the reviews of FITC"; Atlantic (Neophyte / Aim Higher) interviewed paganus (#30), wrote the song-review boxes (#30, #31, #34) and the tracking tips (#32); DennisC (FITC) interviewed luv-kohli (#31), zinc (#32, #41) and mick-rippon (#41); Dynamic Harmony (Mazurka / Aim Higher) interviewed Fred (#31); Kal Zakath edited the Deus Ex interview (sources: s-tw030-interview-ender, s-tw030-interview-paganus, s-tw031-interview-luv-kohli, s-tw031-interview-vicious, s-tw031-interview-fred, s-tw032-fitc-complaints, s-tw034-interview-deus-ex, s-tw041-interview-mick-rippon). Review policy: "we will not actually rate the songs, but suggest the ones we think you'd like to hear most", drawn from listening to "most new music uploads to ftp.cdrom.com" (source: s-tw030-interview-paganus). In #34 Kal Zakath asked readers whether FITC had made them check out overlooked composers, planned an "intermediate" tracking-tips column with "some FT2 tricks", and promised interviews with AmusiC and Mick Rippon — Mick Rippon's was done by DennisC in #41 (sources: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex, s-tw041-interview-mick-rippon).
• Numbering quirk. FITC's printed interview numbers are unreliable: "#7" for both Ender and Paganus (#30), "#10" for Luv Kohli (#31) and Zinc (#32), "#11" for Vicious (#31) and Deus Ex (#34), "#12" for Fred (#31) (sources: s-tw030-interview-ender, s-tw030-interview-paganus, s-tw031-interview-luv-kohli, s-tw031-interview-vicious, s-tw031-interview-fred, s-tw034-interview-deus-ex).
• January–April 1996. DennisC (#41 Shawn); Zinc (#42 balrog, #44 acidfrog, #50 vadimvs, #52 daedalus and ganja-man, #54 quantam-porcupine and scirocco, #55 clef) — "about 3 interviews this week alone" in late March 1996, most of them IRC logs left "in tact"; Master of Darkness (#43 pariah, announced as "a (long-awaited) comeback of FITC" and the start of a series on the Toronto scene); Kal Zakath (#54 saxy; "jtown", Inferno); Cerulean (#54 injekted and subhuman) (sources: s-tw041-interview-shawnm, s-tw042-interview-balrog, s-tw043-interview-pariah, s-tw044-interview-acidfrog, s-tw050-interview-vadimvs, s-tw052-interview-daedalus, s-tw052-interview-ganja-man, s-tw054-interview-saxy, s-tw054-interview-quantam-porcupine, s-tw054-interview-scirocco, s-tw054-interview-injekted-and-subhuman, s-tw055-interview-clef). Kal Zakath's preface of 11 April 1996: interviews, "our original focus back in the 'faces in the crowd' days", had been neglected for reviewing, so #54 carried four to make up (source: s-tw054-interview-saxy).

1996–98#

• Kal Zakath (jtown, "Inferno/N55/CCS/TW") and Kleitus (Seth Katzman, "Inferno/TW") did #60 rage, #62 vegas and #63 Ryan together or alone, and Kal Zakath #66 liam-the-lemming; their logs are IRC captures "with a bit of editing for the sake of clarity" (sources: s-tw060-interview-rage, s-tw062-interview-vegas, s-tw063-interview-ryan-sprott, s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming). Zinc's #60 FITC piece (fisherman) signs "SE/Thought" and mentions a pending "TraxTips #2" (source: s-tw060-interview-fisherman).
• Mage (Glen Dwayne Warner) conducted the #67 u4ia interview by e-mail over about six weeks — the archive's one non-IRC long-form interview (source: s-tw067-interview-u4ia).
• Pizza Head (17, on irc.neato.org #trax) interviewed perisoft (#87) and cosmic (#90); Psibelius printed the #87 log "completely unformatted" and uncorrected (sources: s-tw087-interview-perisoft, s-tw090-interview-cosmic).
• Behemoth's first contribution "as a staffer" was the #103 mikmak interview (27 June 1997), promising a weekly scene-related piece (source: s-tw103-interview-mikmak). Jeremy Rice interviewed khyron in #111 (September 1997) — "Interview with Khyron (again =)", the first being Psibelius's "Khyron Unleashed" in #30 (source: s-tw111-interview-khyron). Zinc's #119 mental-floss interview (16 February 1998) is in the last issue of the archive and was Mental Floss's first TW interview (source: s-tw119-interview-mental-floss).
• A reader's view, January 1996 (Mick Rippon): "Traxweekly is the most wonderful idea in the world! It keeps the unity which I think is the main strength of the tracker community" (source: s-tw041-interview-mick-rippon).

Contradictions recorded#

• Who ran the newsletter in spring 1995. An earlier version of this page said only that Popcorn "edited the newsletter in 1995" and that Psibelius succeeded him. Populus's own account adds the earlier layer — founded by Populus and Neurosis, handed to Popcorn (source: s-tw016-interview-populus) — and Psibelius places #6 (April 1995) "back when Populus was still running the show" (source: s-tw040-interview-blackwolf), while Popcorn signs "Co-Editor" in #7 (27 April 1995) and "TraxWeekly Editor" by #13 (11 June 1995) (sources: s-tw007-interview-ryan-cramer, s-tw013-interview-big-jim). Reading: Populus and Popcorn ran it together in spring 1995; Popcorn was editor from about June and still in September 1995 (source: s-tw032-20-minute-chip-compo).
• Who ran "Faces in the Crowd". The earlier wording — "Kal Zakath, DennisC and Master of Darkness in the TOC", with Zinc's interviews only in #57, #80 and #109 — understated it: Kal Zakath founded and edited the column, Atlantic and Dynamic Harmony also interviewed (source: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex), Zinc was its main interviewer from #42 (eight of the twelve interviews of January–April 1996) and Cerulean a fifth interviewer (#54) (sources: s-tw042-interview-balrog, s-tw054-interview-injekted-and-subhuman). The "Interview #10" printed on DennisC's Zinc interview (#32) is FITC's series count, not DennisC's — the same number is printed on Luv Kohli's interview in #31 (sources: s-tw031-interview-luv-kohli, s-tw032-interview-zinc).
• Who interviewed Mick Rippon. The #34 editor's note says Kal Zakath planned to; DennisC did it in #41 (sources: s-tw034-interview-deus-ex, s-tw041-interview-mick-rippon).
• Issue #28's date. The issue header (and the TOC) print "28 October 1995", but #27 is 21 September, #29 is 6 October 1995, and the Mesonyx interview was held 16–17 September and calls itself the second FITC after #27's first; the wiki uses 1995-09-28 (source: s-tw028-faces-in-the-crowd-mesonyx).
• The #52 Ganja Man interview. The TOC lists Daedalus as interviewer; the article header reads [Zinc] and every question is from <zinc> (source: s-tw052-interview-ganja-man).
• DennisC's e-mail in #29. The Esper Division header prints DennisC's address as maz@io.org, which is Master of Darkness's address in the same issue — a copy-and-paste slip in the original (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-esper-division).
