Fred (Ink)

Tracker from Hampton, Virginia, and musician of iNK, a Kansas artist group that was starting to make demos; interviewed by Dynamic Harmony for traxweekly's Faces in the Crowd in October 1995, two weeks after his first net-wide release "Bawal". No real name is printed. The single substantive source for this page is that interview (source: s-tw031-interview-fred).

Facts#

  • Started with Scream Tracker in March 1994, shown to him by his friend Progenitor; first admitted tune "Funkbeat" (May 1994), first "decent" one "Relax at Ion Plus" (November 1994).
  • Two semesters as a music major at Christopher Newport University, piano since age six, drums in high school — theory helps, "although there ARE a lot of 'naturals' out there".
  • Went from one or two tunes a day to working slowly on each: "It's not quantity, it's quality." Style moved from fast demo-ish to slower; "Bawal" (neo-classical/demo-ish) and "Farewell" (slow piano) — fred-bwl.zip, fred-fwl.zip in the S3M directory of ftp.cdrom.com.
  • Influences skaven, necros, U2 and the radio.
  • Cannot sample, so he rips with a sample-credit list; objects to leaving original sample names in a module and to reusing signature samples — purple-motion's looped techno beat "in at least 30 different tunes" (see sample-ripping).
  • Placed 11th in 20mc #6 and 10th in #8 (October 1995) (source: s-tw032-20-minute-chip-compo).
  • FITC's suggested-songs list in #29 (6 October 1995) recommended "Bawal" (S3M, demo/orchestral, uploaded 2 October 1995, fred@paracom.com) (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-esper-division).

To verify#

  • (unverified) acidfrog thanks "fred for helping me along when i first came on to #trax 5 months ago" (August 1995) — probably this Fred, not confirmed (source: s-tw044-interview-acidfrog).
  • (unverified) "Fred/Terraformer", vegas's co-op partner on "Rugiada di Montagna" and one of his "underrated" names (June 1996), may or may not be the same person; Terraformer is smeghead's group (source: s-tw062-interview-vegas).
