Lord Pegasus (Zack Smith)

kosmic and ACiD (pHluid) tracker from Georgia, USA, self-taught by ear and schooled by basehead; the single substantial source is his TraxWeekly interview of July 1995 (source: s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus). His flame at perisoft, appended to the pinion interview in #14, is not summarised (source: s-tw014-interview-pinion).

Facts#

  • Origin: heard control77 and die.mod through the PC speaker, got a Sound Blaster 1.0 and then an SB16 ("why no gus? I dunno"), found ModEdit 1.0 and wrote distorsion — one guitar sample, one pattern, seven seconds. "I started writing MUSIC when I got st3" (scream-tracker-3); he kept his first S3M (source: s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus).
  • Basehead taught him chords over the phone on the piano and "helped school me"; about half his samples are Basehead's; Basehead's poet!klf is a remix of one of Lord Pegasus's own songs. He learns theory from the necros and Basehead articles (source: s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus).
  • Workflow: no set way — bassline, chord pattern, chosen samples or key-banging; "I just keep changing notes until I find what sounds 'good'"; two samples from his PSR keyboard in his latest tune; all-day sessions on caffeine. Against Necros's "don't drink while tracking": caffeine keeps ideas, alcohol just makes odd songs, such as his funky Dragon Warrior theme (source: s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus; see tracking-workflow).
  • Scene views: rippers "have no musical talent" and a whole S3M of his was ripped (sample-ripping); the scene is not known enough to affect the "real world" — the Wired article on the demoscene is a start; "KOSMIC WERLD DOMINATION" (source: s-tw018-interview-lord-pegasus).
  • Later: vegas names him an influence (June 1996) (source: s-tw062-interview-vegas); ryan-sprott met him in July 1996 — still in Kosmic, on a six-week road trip, keyboard broken (source: s-tw063-interview-ryan-sprott).
