TFMX

chris-huelsbeck's second-generation driver, born on the C64 in the summer of 1988 and carried to the Amiga (and later DOS, SNES and the N64's MusyX): instead of only "the typical rigid instrument table" it runs "a simple but powerful script language … for every note played" (sources: s-vgmpf-soundmonitor-tfmx, s-emuwiki-huelsbeck-interview).

Facts#

• Why: in June 1988 Hülsbeck still used soundmonitor with samples; that summer he found the new 8580 sid "played samples too quietly and decided to improve on the analog SID sounds instead" — the C64 TFMX driver and editor were the result (source: s-vgmpf-soundmonitor-tfmx; see chip-samples).
• First uses: Starball (August 1988, released December); first release Garrison (September 1988, scored by Ramiro Vaca); bugfixes late 1988 and early 1989 (source: s-vgmpf-soundmonitor-tfmx).
• Never released: only Hülsbeck and Vaca had the C64 editor; he "prefers finding time to write a proper manual over spending time on support". The demoscene wrote its own editors for the format in 1989–90, Mastercomposer V1.0 and Timecomposer V4.0 (source: s-vgmpf-soundmonitor-tfmx).
• The script idea, in Hülsbeck's words about the Amiga version whose concept "came directly from the C64 version, specially the way a single sound was generated": a very short fixed-pitch drum played "just before a pitched bass sound … it would sound like 2 channels were used at the same time" (channel-interleaving, wavetable-programming; source: s-emuwiki-huelsbeck-interview). On Amiga a software mixer later folded four virtual channels into one for seven in total, with help from Jochen Hippel (source: s-emuwiki-huelsbeck-interview).
• Family: Amiga TFMX from later in 1988 (after his RAW and DNS formats); TFMX-Editor also drove a YM2149F board for a few Atari ST conversions; DOS formats AWS (1992), MDT/SMP (1993), MDAT/SMPL (1995); TFMX on SNES; MusyX on N64 "based on TFMX" (source: s-vgmpf-chris-huelsbeck). Hülsbeck's own C64 favourites, R-Type title and Starball, are TFMX-era tunes (source: s-remix64-huelsbeck-interview).

Dating and the scene editors#

• CSDb, 2006: "TFMX has neither been spread nor leaked in any way"; Hülsbeck "wanted to write proper documents for it" before releasing; a poster dates the C64 editor to 1987 with Starball as the example tune, against VGMPF's summer-1988 account — both agree on Starball (source: s-csdb-huelsbeck-tfmx-thread). Unresolved (2026-08-30): no primary source dates the C64 editor; the wiki's timelines follow VGMPF's dated account (summer 1988, after the 8580's sample problems), which Hülsbeck's own 2004 ordering — TFM, then the sample revision, then TFMX — fits without naming a year (source: s-sidin05-huelsbeck-interview).
• SIDId: TFMX = "The Final Musicsystem eXtended", released 1988; TFMX/MasterComposer by Playboy & Sir Tippitt (Bierfront, 1990), "based on the player of … Starball.sid"; TFMX/TimeComposer by Oliver Hoeller (Rhodan), 1990 (source: s-sidid-player-list).
• Wikipedia credits programmer Peter Thierolf as co-creator of "the TFMX … sound editor" (platform unstated; unverified) (source: s-wikipedia-chris-huelsbeck). Hülsbeck: "invented my own scripting system for sounds and music" (source: s-audiogang-huelsbeck-interview).

Hülsbeck's own account (SIDin, 2004)#

• Two player revisions sat between Soundmonitor and TFMX: "TFM, for 'The Final Musicplayer' which funnily wasn't the final one at all", made "more memory and CPU efficient", and a second that "added my sample playback". He went "back to non-sample SID sound" for two reasons, not one — "the later revisions of the C64 had problems with that and the games became so big and resource hungry" — and wrote "another editor and player that was able to do some very wild SID effects and good drums without samples. It was called TFMX (which was for 'The Final Musicsystem Extended' ;)". His favourite own SID in 2004 was still Starball (source: s-sidin05-huelsbeck-interview).
