Smeghead (David Oranchak)
Techno tracker of the Virginia group Terraformer, a scream-tracker-3 user who composes by "stream of consciousness"; the main source is master-of-darkness's "Faces in the Crowd" interview of October 1995 (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead).
Facts#
- From Fayetteville, NC; a Virginia Tech student, where Kiwidog, Terraformer's founder/coder, recruited him after his summer-1994 tunes (Pollution); composing for a little over a year by October 1995. The group's other members are from Northern Virginia; its FTP site was gremlinx.bevc.blacksburg.va.us (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead).
- Some guitar, no theory — songs should not "fit some sort of defined 'theory'"; a real guitar sound in a MOD or S3M needs "1000k of pre-made guitar riffs". Tracks techno "because it is easy to track"; mood pieces Donovan's Carnival and Parliament of Eternity; "for every good techno tune, there exist 20 that are terrible". Inspirations LizardKing, purple-motion, skaven, necros, CCCatch (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead).
- Tracks "out of sheer boredom" and for fun — "a big kid with a big toy"; on hornet's Demonews ratings: "four guys voting … ain't exactly a precise measurement", but one star is right 90% of the time (source: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead).
- Eighteen S3M releases on the Hornet archive by October 1995, from the three-song disk
smegpol1.zipto Transition (full list in the summary); placed 8th (5.5) in the 20-minute-chip-compo's compo #8 on 28 October 1995 (sources: s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead, s-tw032-20-minute-chip-compo). - Greeted by Fred of iNK among his #trax friends, October 1995 (source: s-tw031-interview-fred).
