Purple Motion
Musician of future-crew and the scene's reference point for "demo music": Zapper is "affected by Purple Motion (like every other tracker)" (source: s-tw027-interview-zapper), Phoenix names his Turbulence as the standard setter of the style (source: s-tw001-interview-phoenix), jeffrey-lim calls When the Heaven's Fall the best S3M ever (source: s-it-manual), and two 1997 beginners speak of "the days of Purple Motion, Lizardking, Riku" as an era (source: s-tw105-newbie-interviews). Szalemandre lists his early chip songs among the classic 1995 chiptunes (source: s-tw037-death-of-the-chiptune-debate).
Facts#
- One of the five-musicians (pmotion@unix.mpoli.fi) from March 1995, though absent from the group's TraxWeekly interview; the others praise Starshine ("the most ELITE song is still the middle section") and joke about Escape from Pori; Basehead: "his rhythm sucks but other than that he's superior" (source: s-tw003-interview-five-musicians).
- The Second Reality soundtrack uses the Amiga "Sonix Lead" sound, according to Zapper (source: s-tw027-interview-zapper).
- In August 1997 he "studies music full-time and is looking for a record contract"; a Music Contest 5 jury called Skaven's entry "too purple motionish" (source: s-tw109-interview-skaven).
In the interviews (1995–96)#
- Songs named: Starshine — nemesis's favourite tracked song of all and jase's favourite; Global Motion — daedalus's favourite PC song; Inside Out and Sundance — what quantam-porcupine wants to write like, who also admires Minimum Velocity for fitting "it all into just 2 channels"; Exploration — rage (sources: s-tw004-interview-nemesis, s-tw022-interview-jase, s-tw052-interview-daedalus, s-tw054-interview-quantam-porcupine, s-tw060-interview-rage; see channel-interleaving).
- An influence for big-jim, smeghead ("PM"), paganus, luv-kohli and scirocco (his first tracked influence); Rage and liam-the-lemming name him as the influence that got them tracking; ryan-sprott lists "pm" among the overrated (sources: s-tw013-interview-big-jim, s-tw029-faces-in-the-crowd-smeghead, s-tw030-interview-paganus, s-tw031-interview-luv-kohli, s-tw054-interview-scirocco, s-tw060-interview-rage, s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming, s-tw063-interview-ryan-sprott).
- The imitation problem: NAID 1995 had "a lot of attempted Purple Motion (still)" (source: s-tw006-naid-opinion-interviews); perisoft's Paranoia was "a deliberate attempt to be 'Purple Motioney'", and Liam the Lemming "a Purple Motion that actually writes music" (source: s-tw011-interview-perisoft); popcorn called Big Jim "the next Purple Motion" (source: s-tw013-interview-big-jim); master-of-darkness had seen "too many purple motion ripoffs" (source: s-tw043-interview-pariah); Fred: his looped techno beat is the archetypal overused rip, "in at least 30 different tunes", and he saw "purple motion" left in a stranger's sample names (source: s-tw031-interview-fred); the "PM SONIX-LEAD siner synth" as a 1995 in-joke — "everyone plays the sonix lead synth" (atlantic and Paganus) (source: s-tw030-interview-paganus; see sample-ripping).
