Intense Tech #15 — Let's Mix It Up (and Down) (Defense Mechanism)

Mixing with four channels and "four bits of dynamic range": defense-mechanism (intense-tech) treats volume, stereo placement and frequency range as three separate levers in lsdj, and adds two volume tricks — a snare transient and the wave synth's LIMIT.

Key claims#

• Panning as space: alternating left/right on pulse notes or noise hi-hats creates "a sense of space and ambience" even though the Game Boy only offers left, right or both (demo: lead in PU1, harmony in PU2, kick and bass on WAV, hats and snare on NOI, first without, then with panning).
• Octaves as frequency control: transposing a lead an octave freshens it and keeps two instruments out of the same range — the two-hands-on-a-piano picture; change register before reaching for volume.

Different LIMIT values at the synth's start and end plus W commands (speed and length) make a volume envelope.
• ADSR on pulse: like chained E commands — volume digit, duration digit, the next stage opens once the second digit is set; unlike a fading E it can rise to a chosen lower maximum. Any version can mimic ADSR with a table's volume column at the price of a table.
