The Grey Note (Necros)
necros's saxophone piece from the musicdisk Progression (greynote.s3m) — the PC scene's standard example of a realistic solo instrument inside a module, and its standard example of a sample that must not be ripped (sources: s-tw084-perfect-samples-the-piano, s-tw024-sample-ripping-debate, s-tw070-realism-debate).
How it is built#
- The sax is not one sample: seven or eight sax passages were sampled and the song jumps between them with sample offsets, with an echo channel hiding the seams — realistic precisely because the human imperfections survive (Sklathill, source: s-tw084-perfect-samples-the-piano; see sample-offset and fake-echo).
- psibelius's description in the 1996 realism debate: the lead "is almost a huge wav file chopped up into ten pieces", which is why it works; Necros's own method for a sax is "10+ samples of bends, hits, overdrives, diff octaves, and keyclick noises" in one instrument, and he named "Orchard Street" on his coming musicdisk as the better sax (source: s-tw070-realism-debate; see multisampling).
In the debates#
- Realism. Necros's answer to "a sax in a tracked song is futile" was "listen to
greynote.s3m" (source: s-tw070-realism-debate; the whole argument is on realism-in-tracked-music). - Ripping. Psibelius's rule: an individualised sample that belongs to one song — the Grey Note sax phrases are melody lines, not single notes — is off limits, like ripping lyrics (source: s-tw024-sample-ripping-debate; see sample-ripping). Shawn of NOISE (January 1996) passed the song on the other count — sampled passages are legitimate when rearranged: "a creative use of the samples", though he "wouldn't have accepted it" if the solo fragments had simply been played end to end (source: s-tw041-interview-shawnm).
Techniques to study in it: sample-offset (phrase sampling), multisampling, fake-echo.
