Nata (Stephan Parth)
Italian SID composer from Naturns (South Tyrol), 22 in January 2006, member of Samar Productions, who began composing in 2003 and works in goattracker on a PC — "Yes it's cross-composing" — with an MMC64 to hear the result on a real commodore-64; Tognon introduced him as "a very young and active Italian composer" (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview).
Facts#
- Background: saw his brother's C64 in 1989 at age 6 ("the first computer I ever saw"); later bought a C64-II, a 1541-II and a green monitor; trained in advertising, jobless at the time of the interview. Why SID: "I have always liked raw synthesizer sounds, but until 2003 there was no way to start composing" (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview).
- Tools: GoatTracker 2.2 — "it offers nearly everything I need. Cadaver was very generous and implemented a lot of features that I requested" (lasse-oorni); his answer to the "GT is not a real C64 editor" objection: "You just have to use 8580 emulation and reSID interpolation turned on", and Hein, Jammer and Randall use it too. He tried Voicetracker, DMC and JCH's editor first — "simply too hard for me". Emulator: vice ("CCS64 SID emulation is too inaccurate"), for IDE64-fixed games, REU simulation and SID-model switching. Hardware: an MMC64 card to test music, play games and listen to the hvsc ("the BIOS has no save/load routines and only a simple Sidplayer") (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview).
- Chip: "I prefer the 8580. It's a heavily improved SID, but unfortunately the most old game tunes sounds very bad on it" — Ghouls 'n' Ghosts subtune 6 and The Last Ninja subtune 9 "use some odd filter settings that aren't audible on a new SID"; the 8580 "has very nice waveform combinations and filters that are accurate" (sid, filter-programming) (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview).
- Tunes: Stargate (GoatTracker 2.0 beta; "quite a simple structure but is finest trance-techno"; "THE FIRST song that has been released with the improved GT system"); Sentimentale Tc-Mix (from Sentimentale and Sentimentale 8580, techno part from 0:33); Nata is Back ("a bit experimental"); the rest of
c64music\VARIOUS\M-R\Nata\Early_Tuneshe calls "really worse". Planned in 2006: a first collection of about 8 tunes through Samar Productions, a 6-channel stereo-SID tune made in summer 2005, a tune for the HVSC crew's 10th anniversary, one for the diskmag Attitude, more 1:1 covers with filters refitted for the 8580 (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview). - Taste: game composers chris-huelsbeck, Tim Follin, martin-galway, jeroen-tel, rob-hubbard, but "I like music of scene musicians much more" — Cane, DOS, Jeff, Jammer, Randall, Hein Holt, Reed, _V_, Welle: Erdball / Honey; a 16-title favourites list (PseudoGrafx, TBB, Taki, Chubrock, Tomas Danko, _V_, Tim von Straaten, Stephan Schmid, reyn-ouwehand's Dutch Breeze: Soft and Wet, AMJ, Hülsbeck's Shades, Jammer, Cyberbrain, The Syndrom, Nebula, Kristian Røstøen) and a "probably BEST" list (Guerrilla War, Wizball, The Last Ninja, Aerobics, Rainbow Islands, R-Type, IK+) are in the summary. Wishes: a C64 version of GoatTracker, music for a C64 Zelda or Bomberman, his own music group, "SID music forever" (source: s-sidin09-nata-interview).
