TW #25 — Loops and Extended Samples (The Zapper)
the-zapper defends long samples and loops ("texture, presence and some kind of feel") and explains how to make them sit in time.
Key claims#
- Record your own riffs against a sequencer's click (PC-speaker metronome at the target tempo) so the loop is in time; sample "rare" material, isolated riffs, and be original with it.
- Samples over 64 K must be split (except in FT2, but split anyway) — split at the up-beats.
- In the tracker, retrigger the loop on every up-beat (rows 00, 16, 32, 48…) so it re-syncs, put a bass drum every 4 or 8 rows, then fine-tune the song tempo until the drum sits on the loop. Too short a loop: a tight loop at its end; too long:
SDxnote delay orOxxoffset.
