Stephan Schmid (Steppe)

German C64 scener (Erlangen; 28 in 2003), webmaster of the Demodungeon site and a member of the hvsc crew from October 2002, who rips the tunes of the demos he documents; as a composer he was active for three weeks in 1991 in soundmonitor, and Tognon interviewed him in sidin #3 for his HVSC work and for Tune 2, "one of the best Last Ninja 2 inspired composition" (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).

Facts#

  • Demodungeon (www.demodungeon.com): "a site meant as a tribute to the C64 demoscene"; the plan to present every SID tune played in the demos with screenshots led him to rip those missing from HVSC, and those rips to the crew invitation in October 2002 (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
  • HVSC crew: "about one to two hours per day" — checking demos and disks for unripped tunes, ripping, contacting composers for information and verification, the mailing lists, "maintaining the Ripped Tunes list and the RSID to do list", and beta-testing the update in its last one or two weeks (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
  • Tunes (1991, Soundmonitor typed in from the 64'er listing): Erste Schritte, made the day he finished typing — "nothing special, both musically and technically"; Tune 2 "with the unintentionally crept in Last Ninja II cover" (last-ninja-2); Nicht Schlecht with "soft arpeggios" and "my first attempt on doing a pseudo 4 channel sound, by interweaving drums and bassline" (channel-interleaving, chord-arpeggio). He stopped because the crack-intro sounds he wanted were "simply impossible" in Soundmonitor; in February 2003 he started again with the JCH editor (chordian) (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
  • Kit and preferences: a real C64 beside the PC and a 1541-II for transfers; vice for ripping and coding only — never for games, demos or composing; a breadbox (6581) and a C64-II (8580) to hear each tune on the chip it was written for: "Samples and filters on the 6581, the combined waveforms and the generally clearer sound on the 8580" (sid, commodore-64) (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
  • Taste: jeroen-tel, martin-galway, Follin, matt-gray and Martin Walker among the game composers, rob-hubbard acknowledged, but 90 % of his listening in HVSC's /VARIOUS: Mitch & Dane, Shogoon, Daf, Jeff, Vip, DJB, GRG, Goto80, Trident, Wacek, Wizard; his ten named favourites are in the summary (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
  • Rip compo (2003): with Peter Sandén, at demodungeon.com/ripcompo/, "to fill out the last empty spots in HVSC with missing SID tunes"; prizes included Instant Remedy's C64 remix CD (source: s-sidin03-schmid-interview).
