Defiance

A small PC music and demo group of 1994–95, founded around Zer0 and run from spring 1995 by perisoft; it had a "Defiance Column" in the first issues of traxweekly (TOC: #1, #2, #4, #11), and Zer0 wrote for the newsletter and conducted its interview with stalker (source: s-tw004-interview-stalker).

Facts#

• Zer0 recruited Perisoft on IRC in early December 1994 as an "exalted cofounder"; when Zer0 "got tired and left", lowrider took over, then left with personal problems and handed Perisoft the presidency on IRC; half the members had gone with Zer0, leaving "4 or so" in May 1995 (source: s-tw011-interview-perisoft).
• In April 1995 Zer0 was still its president when Stalker of OTM joined — "aside from the President being a weeny, it's a cool group" (source: s-tw004-interview-stalker).
• By June 1995 the coder claim described a group that "totally changed and was reorganizing", with Cerulean, Perisoft and himself set to "bring it back to leetness" (source: s-tw015-interview-claim).
• Liam the Lemming almost joined in 1995 — "Perisoft got hold of loads of my stuff from May 95 and kept begging me to join" — but "Defiance split" and he went to Bass Productions, S!P and moz[IC]art instead (source: s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming).
• populus (Nicolas Roberge), TraxWeekly's co-founder, was a member in June 1995, alongside epinicion (source: s-tw016-interview-populus). blackwolf was a member before Epinicion (and briefly of UNiON) (source: s-tw040-interview-blackwolf); his "Goodbye To A Good Thing", released through Defiance according to liam-the-lemming, was the song that "really started me off on the piano stuff" for Liam (source: s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming).
• Releases and sites: quarex's musicdisk D-HMTRCH (Hamsterchant) was a Defiance release on cdrom.com; in July 1995 Defiance had two FTP sites while kosmic had lost its one (source: s-tw019-interview-quarex).
• Members named in the sources: Zer0, lowrider, Perisoft, Stalker, Claim, Cerulean, Ranger Rick, Populus, Blackwolf, Quarex (release only).
• Perisoft in January 1997: he had founded Defiance "with zer0 and Ranger Rick", and it "died soon after naid '95" — so the mid-1995 rebuild did not last (source: s-tw087-interview-perisoft).
• Zer0 is injekted (Brandon Douglas Balliett): Cerulean's April 1996 interview opens with "some older #trax people remember you as Zer0 of Defiance"; he "didn't do much" tracking there and founded ultrabeat in 1996 (source: s-tw054-interview-injekted-and-subhuman).

Contradictions recorded#

• Timeline. #11 (May 1995) has Perisoft rebuilding the group from about four members and #15 (June 1995) has Claim, Cerulean and Perisoft set to revive it; in #87 (January 1997) Perisoft says it "died soon after naid '95" and that he founded it "with zer0 and Ranger Rick" — in #11 Zer0 had recruited him as "exalted cofounder" (sources: s-tw011-interview-perisoft, s-tw015-interview-claim, s-tw087-interview-perisoft). Not contradictory — the revival failed — but Ranger Rick as co-founder comes from #87 only. Liam the Lemming's "Defiance split" after May 1995 is consistent (source: s-tw066-interview-liam-the-lemming).
