created 2026-08-30 · updated 2026-08-30

Founder of the music group Grey and a #trax regular, interviewed by Kleitus in July 1996 — the single source for this page (source: s-tw063-interview-ryan-sprott). Not to be confused with Ryan Cramer (TraxWeekly #7) or pinion (Ryan Hunt); he used no handle — just "ryan" — and signed vergazo@hilconet.com.

Facts#

  • Kerrville, Texas (Tivy High School), an army childhood in Germany and across Europe; ISP tech support in 1996; "nearly five years" on IRC by July 1996, in the scene since August 1995 — tracking shown to him by a colleague, "wireman", who supplied about 90 % of his samples (basehead the rest).
  • Grey: Ryan, hunz, gblues, luvk, skie, imager, cd, qporcupine; releases on ftp.fm.org/pub/music/grey/.
  • Tools: fasttracker-2; wanted mouse and EMS support in impulse-tracker. Proposed judging Music Contest 4 entries in each format's own tracker because IT had no standalone player (compos).
  • Pro-ripping: SoundTracker modules were "100% ripped samples" and still rock (sample-ripping).
  • Self-described holder of Demonews's record for one-star ratings (hornet); proudest of an MC4 co-op with gblues; lyrics written but never included.
  • Overrated in his view: necros, Elwood, skaven, purple-motion, rage; underrated: Mellow-D, Basehead and the Amiga composers of Aminet.
