Richard Bayliss

British C64 game programmer and musician, active since 1991 with SEUCK games and since 1994 with BASIC games and his own music, prolific enough in 2006 that stefano-tognon asked whether he was "the unique scener around today that can release a game a week" — with the gameplay sometimes criticised "but music is always good" (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview). This page records only what the sidin #10 interview says.

Facts#

  • Born on Christmas Day; 27 in July 2006 (so 1978, by arithmetic). Day job in 2006: a pharmaceutical distribution warehouse (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).
  • Path: Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit games from 1991; BASIC and composing from 1994 after a Public Domain utilities tape; turbo-assembler from 1999; cross-assembly from 2003 or 2004 (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).
  • Projects in July 2006: Sub Hunter (after Mastertronic's VIC-20 Sub Hunt; parallax scrolling and sub-games), Crash Course with The Art Ravers (a maze game on 20+ courses), further "DMC albums" (music collections on disk), and a tribute demo to Edwin van Santen (EVS/20CC, died May 2006) planned for the end of July 2006. His joke tune for Fake Game is the worst SID he admits to; for the 2006 Crap Game compo entry Block Defenz he "programmed" the music in Turbo Assembler instead (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).

Tools and preferences#

  • Editors in order: Music Assembler and Music Mixer Module 5 (formerly Voicetracker), future-composer V4 (not easy), DMC V2.0 (learned from the utility disk's example tunes), then mostly DMC V4.0 and V5.0 — a DMC V4.0B from the Magna Musica disk had a packer bug, a working copy came from the Internet in 2001; DMC V5.0 he calls "one of the most complex version of DMC at the time". goattracker occasionally: he does not feel comfortable with its sounds — "It does not beat the traditional real C64 old/new SID chip" — and misses DMC V5's sector editor for sweeping filtered sounds up or down (filter-programming) (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).
  • Real hardware over emulators (vice does not keep sound and action in sync in a SEUCK game); the 8580 sid for its filters, "especially when it comes to using cool composers like DMC V5" (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).
  • Favourites: martin-galway (Insects in Space, Parallax, Miami Vice), rob-hubbard (Mega Apocalypse, best Lightforce), jeroen-tel 1988–1990, Edwin van Santen; of 2006: Drax/maniacs-of-noise, Intensity/Cosine, Fanta, laxity. Dislikes drum'n'bass on the SID (source: s-sidin10-bayliss-interview).
