Tyler Barnes

lsdj musician and tutorial maker who devised and named the ghost-channel — the additive wave trick that gets a second, independently playable note out of the Game Boy's wave channel. He published it on 2013-07-11 as a 22-minute video, Advanced LSDJ Tutorial – The Ghost Channel (youtube.com/watch?v=73VLMNMaRAQ), and as a thread on chipmusic-org the same day: "This is a method I've devised for getting an extra channel of sound out of LSDj. This hidden channel of sound is given to us via custom waveforms + frame switching" (sources: s-tylerbarnes-ghost-channel-tutorial, s-chipmusic-lsdj-ghost-channel).

Facts#

  • Drew every wave by hand rather than generating them: "No synth screen commands were used. They didn't produce the tones I was after." He credits a background in pixel art for the patience — "curved lines aren't too challenging for me" (source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-ghost-channel).
  • Tried a sawtooth rider before settling on a square, "but I could get more octaves and a louder sine when using the square"; accepted nitro2k01's finding that only the octave and the octave + fifth are musically usable, calling it "far from ideal, but I'm still happy to now have the option" (source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-ghost-channel).
  • On wave instruments generally, in a 2014 thread on imitating a flute: build "frames with mostly noise bursts to simulate the attack phase of a musician blowing into the flute", switch them from a table, and let "vibrato and tasteful volume modulation" do the rest (source: s-chipmusic-lsdj-wav-instrument-tutorials; the method is on lead-articulation).
  • Also posts noise-channel drum recipes on chipmusic.org, pointing at the same demo save file (source: raw/chipmusic/lsdj-complete-drum-kit-on-noise-channel-t15681.txt, summarised in s-chipmusic-noise-drum-threads).
  • The demo song file that accompanied the tutorial, Ghost Channel.lsdsng, was hosted on Box and is no longer downloadable as of 2026-08-31.
